The 2021 Canberra Raiders Indigenous Jersey was designed by artist, Rayne Huddleston, Urulah Cultural Art, a proud Ngandi (Roper River/Ngukurr – NT) and Nyiyaparli (Fort Esque Marsh – WA) man. Rayne’s artistic style originates from his maternal grandfather (Ngandi/Ngukkar mob) and the cross hatching comes from Burrunju City, East Arnhem Land, a sacred sight and original place of the Ngukurr people.
The initial concepts for the artwork were created through a collaboration of ideas from Justine Brown a Ngunnawal woman, from Mulleun Dreaming, and students in the NRL School to Work program at Queanbeyan High School, and their stories.
Some of the key elements of the jersey include the Dreamtime story of Mulleun (Wedgetail Eagle) the Ngunnawal totem and Jedbinbilla (Gibraltor Rocks). The jersey also includes the Goanna, the Wiradjuri totem, representing the Raiders’ broader regional connections and player, Jack Wighton’s mob. The eggs represent life, growth and the students involved in the program. The stars/Milky Way are also an important part of the Dreamtime story, and connect us all.
