Player of the Week:
Matthew Scarlett (Geelong)
There is a debate going around amongst Geelong supporters about who is their greatest Full-Back in the history of the Geelong Football Club and in VFL/AFL history for that matter. One name that keeps propping up is Matthew Scarlett. Before the 2009 AFL Grand Final, I would have laughed at this suggestion, but since then, I can see why they regard him in such high esteem.
It would be hard not to agree with them. It was Scarlett that just about single handedly won the game for Geelong. In a tense final quarter, when the game was up for grabs, the ball fell to Scarlett who had ran a long way from his defensive 50 in a bold risk, with his right foot, kicked the ball off the ground midair to Gary Ablett who continued to ran forward, he kicked the ball long to the goalsquare, where Chapman won the ball from Varcoe and scored the match winning goal for Geelong. From that moment on, my love and respect for Matthew Scarlett grew and is my greatest memory of him.
Is he the greatest full-back in the history of our great game? It'll be a debate that will linger on for quite some time, but he has some merit though to be amongst the top 3 full backs of all-time, among greats such as Stephen Silvagni, Dustin Fletcher, Chris Langford, etc? Time will tell.
One of his strengths is his marking, but what makes him unique about his play, is that he can culminate possession of the ball. Yesterday against the Hawthorn Football Club, he gathered 29 disposals and 8 marks, as well as stopping his opponent and that what makes him a dangerous player, setting play across the half back line, to be amongst the best 3 players for Geelong to set up a 19 point victory over the Hawks.
He played his 250th against Hawthorn yesterday and since his debut in 1998, he has achieved, 2 premierships (2007, 2009), won the NAB Cup (2006, 2009), All-Australian 5 times (2003, 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2009), Garji Greeves Medalist in 2003 and was inducted into the Geelong Hall of Fame in 2006. It's been a stellar career for Scarlett and there's no reason why he cannot get to 300 games.
He may not be the greatest full back in the history of the VFL/AFL, but for the Geelong Football Club, he is no doubt their best full back in my opinion, that has ever played for Geelong.
