Sydney Swans def West Coast Eagles @ the SCG, Sydney by 52 points.
The Sydney Swans have embarked on their best start to the season since 1998 by defeating their arch rivals the West Coast Eagles by 52 points. It was led from the front by veteren recruit Daniel Bradshaw who kicked 6.2 from 12 disposals and 8 marks and Nick Malceski who collected 30 disposals and 5 marks. Not since Rodney Eade was the coach, since they have had a better start, when they won the 1st 5 games of the 1998 season. The win has propelled the Swans on top of the ladder. However, the win was tarnished somewhat by the injury to number 1 defender Craig Bolton who suffered an ankle injury and could be out for at least 6 weeks. Best for the Eagles was Beau Waters who had 24 disposals and 7 marks and Adam Selwood who had 22 disposals and 5 marks. The Sydney Swans face a tough challenge next week, when they face the Brisbane Lions @ the SCG, but the Lions could be without a couple of stars in Jonathan Brown and Daniel Merrett, a win there for the Swans, could set up their season and cement a spot in the top 4, while the Eagles face the Fremantle Dockers in a must-win local derby.

Melbourne def Brisbane Lions @ the MCG, Melbourne by 50 points
It what has been considered one of the biggest upsets this year, the Melbourne Football Club has continued it's impressive start to the season, by defeating top 4 aspirant the Brisbane Lions by 50 points in a dominate display. In a close 1st quarter, the Demons got the jump on the Lions by leading by 11 points. However, they dominated the 2nd quarter by kicking 5.4 to 1.3 to set up the big win. The win was most impressive because, the Lions had come from behind 3 times before this season, and the Demons kept them at bay all game, not giving them a sniff. Best for the Demons was Warrnambool boy Brent Moloney gathering 31 disposals and 3 marks and Matthew Bate was lively up forward all night getting 26 disposals, 11 marks and kicking 1.1. Best for the Lions was inspirational leader Simon Black who gathered 32 disposals and 5 marks. In more bad news for the Lions, Justin Sherman was a late-withdrawal before the game and was replaced in the selected side by Albert Proud, Daniel Merrett receiving a hamstring injury and could miss a couple of weeks and Jonathan Brown didn't look good and some say could be suffering OP. Youngster Jack Trengove is in line for the Rising Star in Round 5, collecting 24 disposals, 6 marks and kicking 2.1. The Demons could improve on their season further next week, when they face North Melbourne in a very winnable game, while the Lions take on the Swans in a tricky must-win game @ the SCG, Sydney.

Port Adelaide def St.Kilda @ AAMI Stadium, Adelaide by 10 points.
The other upset on Saturday night occured in Adelaide, where the Power defeated a previous undefeated St.Kilda team by 10 points. The Saints may have answered questions about who can score their goals last week, when they defeated the Dockers @ Etihad Stadium, but in a low scoring game, their forward line was left wanting and the only forward that looked likely in winning the Saints the game was Adam Schneider. Schneider kicked 3.0 from 24 disposals and 5 marks. Best for the Power were Troy Chaplin across half-back collecting 32 disposals, 12 marks and Domenic Cassisi led from the front as captain collecting 28 disposals, 10 marks. The Power could cement their spot in the 8 by defeating a wounded Adelaide Crows and the Power could end their season by Round 6, which the Power fans would love nothing better to do, while the Saints take on another danger game, where they play the Western Bulldogs on Friday night @ Etihad Stadium, Melbourne. Are the Saints in danger of missing out on the top 4, without their star captain Nick Riewoldt? It's highly unlikely, but things are looking shakey for the Saints without their leader. While this win for the Power, could give them confidence for them to make the 8 this year.

Collingwood def Essendon by 65 @ the MCG, Melbourne
Collingwood has sent a warning to it's rivals in the best possible way, on the biggest stage on the home and away calender, when they defeated the Bombers by 65 points on ANZAC Day. Collingwood flew out of the blocks early kicking 7.5 to 0.3 in the 1st quarter and the game was effectively over by then. Collingwood lead at quarter time was the biggest lead at quarter time by either side since this concept started in 1995. 90,070 was the crowd attendance and it ranked 9th best in VFL/AFL history. Travis Cloke set the tone early for the Magpies and answered some critics in the best possible fashion, where he kicked a couple of goals early and ended up with 4.1 from 17 disposals and 7 marks. The winner of the ANZAC Day Medal for 2010 was Scott Pendlebury. He gathered 29 disposals, 1 mark and kick 1.0 in a dominate display in the Midfield. However, an unlucky player who could have won it was Sharrod Wellingham. He gathered 26 disposals, 7 marks and kicked 2.0. From quarter time, Essendon never looked like getting back in the game and looked slow at times. The loss for the Bombers was a devastating blow for them, as it leaves them floundering in the bottom 4 and facing a tough ask next week, taking on arch rivals Hawthorn, while Collingwood face another arch enemy in Carlton and could cement their spot in the top 4.

North Melbourne def Hawthorn @ Aurora Stadium, Launceston by 12 points.
In what some called the 3rd upset of the weekend, the Kangaroos has caused the Hawks to lose their 2nd consecutive game at Aurora Stadium by 12 points. The Kangaroos had to do it the hard way though. After leading throughout most of the 1st 3 quarter, the Hawks kicked the 1st 3 goals of the game, hit the front and the question was then asked, how far for the Hawks? But the Kangaroos weren't to be denied. They kicked the last 3 goals of the game and won an impressive game and kept their finals aspirations alive in a gutsy performance in a typical never-say-die effort. However, the Hawks were off-set by the very late-withdrawal by Brent Renouf from illness and they were undermanned in the Ruck department. It left the Hawks with Jarryd Roughead, Jarrod Kayler-Thomson and Luke Hodge going up as the 3rd man, up against Hamish McIntosh and Todd Goldstein who dominated the rucking. Luke Hodge was brilliant for the Hawks yet again, collecting 33 disposals and 2 marks, while this game could see the coming of age of Kangaroos midfielder Daniel Wells. Wells kicked 3.1 from 20 disposals and 7 marks. The Kangaroos could be in the 8 next week, providing they win over an ever-improving Melbourne team while the Hawks face a do or die battle over arch rivals Essendon and we know what happened last time when these two sides met with Matthew Lloyd. If both sides are on-song, it should be an intriquing battle to watch.

Fremantle Dockers def Richmond @ Subiaco Oval, Perth by 39 points.
The Dockers impressive start to the season continued but not without a huge scare over Richmond. The Tigers surprised the Dockers in the 1st quarter and flew out of the blocks, kicking 6.1 to 1.5 and looked set for an upset and famous victory. However, the Dockers regain composure in the next 3 quarters kicking 14.17 to 5.6 to win by 40 points. Essendon recruit Adam McPhee played his best game since his return to the Dockers line-up by gathering 26 disposals and 5 marks, but the comeback was led by their captain Matthew Pavlich who kicked 4.2 from 16 disposals and 4 marks. Robin Nahas was lively for the Tigers kicking 3.1 from 18 disposals and 4 marks and Shane Tuck was best in the midfield with 29 disposals, 5 marks and 1.1 for the game. It was the best effort this season we've seen from the Tigers and if they played like they did in the 1st quarter for the full 4 quarters, they could surprise many teams. However, their tall-forward didn't function at all and despite kicking 2.0 from 9 disposals and 4 marks, Jack Riewoldt could have been so much better and looked lazy at times. However, it doesn't get any easier for the Tigers, as they take on a determined Geelong line-up who lost their 2nd game of the season to the Blues, while the Dockers should cement their spot in the top 4, when they face the West Coast Eagles in the local derby.

Carlton def Geelong @ the MCG, Melbourne by 36 points.
Carlton has caused the 4th upset of the weekend by surprising and defeating Geelong by 36 points. The Blues set up the big win in the 2nd quarter where they kicked 6.5 to 2.3 and it left the Cats playing catch-up Football all day from that point onwards. The Blues small forward brigade was too lively and quick for the Cats defenders to handle and the indigenous trio of Eddie Betts, Jeff Garlett and Chris Yarran 7 goals between them. Gary Ablett was best for the Cats with a 33 disposal, 7 mark and 2.1 game, but it wasn't enough. The Cats may have been exposed for pace in this game, as they looked on the slow slide, however, the late withdrawal of Joel Corey before the game, didn't help their chances either way and they still are missing arguably the number 1 defender in the game Matthew Scarlett. However, it was an impressive performance by the Blues and the win has propelled them into the 8. However, next week doesn't come any easier for the Blues, as they take on Collingwood in yet another blockbuster game, while the Cats should bounce back against the hapless Tigers @ home in Skilled Stadium, so good luck Tigers in getting out of their alive.

Heroics of the Week:
Travis Cloke (Collingwood)
There is no such incident this week that stands out for my Heroics of the Week, however, I am choosing this week, Travis Cloke from the Collingwood Football Club. The ANZAC Day game, they say, can make a player and last year, it made one in Patrick Ryder who took over the ruck duties after David Hille went down with an ACL injury. Before the ANZAC Day game, there were huge question marks about his form and fitness heading into the game and after only kicking 4 goals from his 1st 4 outings this season, Cloke if he had a couple of more bad games, could see himself in the VFL. However, he set the tone early for the Magpies kicking a couple of goals early and his confidence grew from there. He ended up kicking 4.1 from 17 disposals and 7 marks for the game, which ended up being his best game for the season. Could this game propel him to even more lofty heights and finally fullfill his promise? Time will time, but there is no better stage for having a big game in the home and away season than on ANZAC Day and that game could be just the making of Travis Cloke.
