Player of the Week:
Dustin Fletcher (Essendon)
In 1993, Bill Clinton succeeds, George W.Bush as the 42nd president of the United States of America, a 7.5 magnitude Earthquake hits Japan, killing 385 people, Varg Vikernes of the Black Metal bands, Burzum and Mayhen was arrested and charged for the murder of fellow Black Metal musician Oystein Aarseth, better known by his stage name Euronymous, Benazir Bhutto becomes the first elected woman to lead a post-colonial muslim state in Pakistan and Dustin Fletcher debuted in Round 2 of the 1993 season against Carlton, which ironically was a drawn game where the Bombers drew with the Blues.
18 years later, you would have thought that Dustin Fletcher would be sitting back relaxing and looking back on a great career with the Essendon Football Club. However, on Saturday he joined the great and immortal Leigh Matthews who played 332 games for the Hawthorn Football Club to be 18th on the list of most games ever played in VFL/AFL history with his 332nd game of VFL/AFL Football.
On Saturday, like in his debut game, he was involved in another draw against the old enemy Carlton and this time, without a shadow of a doubt, made the play of the day to save his team from the jaws of defeat, when he chased down Carlton small forward Jeff Garlett. Garlett would have been licking his lips when he saw the 35 year old Fletcher and thought he could run away from him, but Fletcher was not to be denied and had other thoughts and must have thought to himself, "you're not getting away from me, you little bugga" and chased down Garlett and made the game-saving tackle to at least help give Essendon the 2 points.
And there are no signs of stopping Dustin Fletcher either. He looks as fit as ever and he could easily go around one more year in 2012. If he plays every home and away game this year and next he would be on at least 370 games and depending on how many finals games, Essendon plays, he could catch up to Carlton's Craig Bradley and sit equal 5th on the all-time most games played list. He has been in superb form already in 2011 and being All-Australian in 2000 and 2007, could he become a 3rd time All-Australian?
He has been one of my all-time favourite defenders to watch that has played the game and I would not be surprised one bit, if he goes around one more time after being an All-Australian for the 3rd time in his career. His long kicking from the full-back position has been a feature of his game for 18 years and a delight to watch, and it would be a sad day if Old Man River and Mr.Gadget were to retire, I hope injuries don't cut short his career and he goes out on his own terms, he at least deserves that.
