St.Kilda def Collingwood @ Etihad Stadium, Melbourne
Friday Night Football returned to the main stage in Round 3 and St.Kilda overcame not only Collingwood but did so, with the loss of their inspirational captain in Nick Riewoldt. Riewoldt injured his hamstring high up, late in the 2nd quarter and at that stage, it looked to be how far for the Magpies? Nick Riewoldt wasn't the only casualty of the game, Sam Fisher took a heavy hit and was knocked unconscience early and didn't take part of the game until half way through the final quarter. It was an extraordinary game at the start. Clinton Jones was targetted by the Magpies players and was taken out of the game early, as he was clearly frustrated by their tactics which seemed to work in the 1st half and not only that, the 1st 3 or 4 goals, were came about by a couple of silly and undisciplined free kicks, in fact, the Saints first goal came about from a free kick to Brendon Goddard and a subsequent 50 metre penalty after the Magpies 1st goal without the ball being bounced in the centre. Sam Gilbert was best for the Magpies with 32 disposals and 20 marks, while Luke Ball returned to form for the Magpies with 28 disposals and 8 marks. However, it was a game that the Magpies should have won. They kicked a woeful 4.17 in front of goal and wasted plenty of chances, especially in the 3rd quarter, when they had all the momentum in the game. How will St.Kilda handle the fact that their captain will be out for an indefinate period of time, time will tell, as they face an inspired Fremantle Dockers next week. The Mapgies will have to lick their wounds and face Hawthorn, in a danger game for the Magpies.

St Kilda 10.9 (69)
Collingwood 4.17 (41)

GOALS
St Kilda: Goddard 2, Montagna 2, Dal Santo, Milne, Gram, Schneider, Gardiner, Gwilt
Collingwood: Cloke, Didak, Sidebottom, Beams

Votes:

North Melbourne def West Coast Eagles @ Etihad Stadium, Melbourne
Brent Harvey returned to his best on Saturday afternoon with a 44 disposals, 11 marks and 1.3 game to help steer the Kangaroos to a good win over a disappointing West Coast Eagles. The Eagles started well enough away from home, leading at quarter time, in a high scoring opening quarter 6.5 to 6.1, but fell away from that point on. The Kangaroos bounced back in the best way possible after the shellacking they got the week before at the hands of the Saints and handed Brad Scott his 1st win as coach of the club. Aaron Edwards returned to the Kangaroos line-up and was solid for them with a 15 disposal, 10 mark and 2.0 game. However, Round 4 will be a litmus test for the Kangaroos to see where they are at, as they play an in-form Sydney Swans at Etihad Stadium, while the Eagles take on the Bombers at Subiaco Oval. Another loss for the Eagles at home, could end their season by Round 4.

Brisbane Lions def Port Adelaide @ AAMI Stadium, Adelaide
The Port Adelaide Power had a litmus test in Round 3 to see where they were against top 4 aspirant the Brisbane Lions and came away from the game empty handed, as the Lions came home victorious at AAMI Stadium by 27 points. The Lions flew out of the blocks in the opening term kicking 5.5 to 1.4 and were never headed and lead by as much as 50 points throughout the game. Jonathan Brown for the Lions had a quieter game this week kicking 5.1 from 16 disposals and 5 marks, but Matthew Maguire enjoyed some good form for his new club with a 27 disposal, 10 mark game across half back. It was a disappointing result for the Power, as I thought, that they could have won this game, but the win could have come at a cost for the Lions though with Mitchell Clark reported for striking Jackson Trengove and Ash McGrath reported for engaging in rough conduct against Cameron Cloke and Simon Black injuring a calf muscle during the game. The Power have a tough task bouncing back next week and this loss could prove fatal, as they will face a Geelong line-up who will be seething about their loss to the Dockers in Geelong, while the Lions remain undefeated and could extend that to 4 games, as they return to the Gabba to host the Western Bulldogs.

Brisbane Lions: 16.12.108
Port Adelaide: 11.15.81

GOALS
Port Adelaide:
Tredrea 3, Salopek 2, Schulz 2, Davenport, Carlile, Pearce, Boak

Votes:
5: Michael Rischitelli (Lions), 4: Matthew Maguire (Lions), 3: Steven Salopek (Power), 2: Jonathan Brown (Lions), 1: Justin Sherman (Lions)

Sydney Swans def Richmond @ the SCG, Sydney
Richmond's horror 2010 season continued this time at the SCG, at the hands of the Sydney Swans. It was the 8th consecutive win by the Swans over the Tigers stretching back to 2006. The Swans kicked the 1st 9 goals of the game before Shane Edwards kicked the 1st goal for the Tigers, but the game by then was all but over. Daniel Bradshaw returned to form at his new club booting 4 goals from 12 disposals and 7 marks. Heath Grundy continued his stellar start to the season with a 33 disposal and 10 mark game while despite being inaccurate, Ben McGlynn continues to thrive in his new environment kicking 3.5 from 31 disposals and 9 marks. However, it wasn't all doom and gloom for the Tigers, as they won their 1st quarter of the season, the final quarter of the game, kicking 3.4 to 3.2 and Dustin Martin proved to be a great pick up by the Tigers with a 22 disposal and 1 mark game. The Swans travel to Melbourne in Round 4 to play the Kangaroos and a win there could set up their season, while the Tigers face a tough ask to get their 1st win of the season, as they take on a rejuvenated Melbourne team at the MCG.

Sydney Swans: 16.15.111
Richmond: 7.14.56

GOALS
Sydney Swans:
Bradshaw 4, McGlynn 3, Goodes 2, O'Keefe, Kennedy, Jack, Moore, Mumford, Bolton, Malceski
Richmond: Riewoldt 3, Edwards, Simmonds, Nason, Deledio

Votes:
5: Heath Grundy (Swans), 4: Ben McGlynn (Swans), 3: Jude Bolton (Swans), 2: Jarrad McVeigh (Swans), 1: Daniel Bradshaw (Swans)

Essendon def Carlton @ the MCG, Melbourne
Essendon continued it's good streak over Carlton winning it's 6th consecutive game over the Blues leaving Matthew Knights undefeated against Brett Ratten in head to head games between the coaches. Mark Williams was another player to return to form at his new club kick 4.0 from 8 disposals and 2 marks, but the Bombers were lead from the front superbly by Nathan Lovett-Murray who returned to the line-up in his 1st game of the season collecting 31 disposals, 5 marks and 1.0. It was a difficult pill to swallow for the Blues to take, as their next 4 to 6 weeks of Football could see them potentially become wooden spooner contenders and be potentially 1 and 6 after 7 Rounds, whereas, Essendon could be back on track, with a win over the Eagles in Perth.

Essendon: 13.17.95
Carlton: 10.15.75

GOALS
Carlton:
Betts 2, O'hAilpin 2, Simpson 2, Houlihan, Robinson, Waite, Yarran
Essendon: Williams 4, Reimers 3, Gumbleton, Hocking, Lonergan, Lovett-Murray, Ryder, Zaharakis

Votes:
5: Nathan Lovett-Murray (Bombers), 4: Ricky Dyson (Bombers), 3: Kade Simpson (Blues), 2: Brent Stanton (Bombers), 1: Andrew Carrazzo (Blues)

Melbourne def Adelaide Crows @ the MCG, Melbourne
The Demons recorded their 1st win of the 2010 season over an injury-plagued Adelaide Crows team which was inspired by their inspirational leader Jim Stynes who is suffering from Cancer. The win no doubt would have been just the tonic for him. However, it wasn't easy for the Demons though, as they were down by 19 points and in a low scoring game, kicked only 1 goal until half-time. However, they clicked into gear in the 3rd quarter kicking 4.3 to 1.1 and held on for the big win. The Crows injury-riddled season continued with injuries to Nathan Bock (Hamstring), Patrick Dangerfield (Neck), Trent Hentschel (Knee) and Kurt Tippett (Ankle) during the game and they also lost Scott Stevens before the game who was replaced by Chris Schmidt. It was a disappointing result for the Crows, as most tipsters would have pencilled this as a win for the Crows, however, they face another tricky winnable game against the Blues at home and a loss there could end their season. For the Demons, they take on a hapless Tigers and a win there could propel them into the 8, which would have been unheard of at the start of the season for the Demons. Could 2010 be the season that the Demons finally come of age?

Melbourne: 7.15.57
Adelaide Crows: 5.11.41

GOALS
Melbourne:
Bate 2, Bennell, Green, Jones, McDonald, Trengove
Adelaide: Burton 3, Cook, Maric

Western Bulldogs def Hawthorn @ Etihad Stadium, Melbourne
The Western Bulldogs had to wait until the final quarter to overcame a spirited Hawthorn team that was led by Barry Hall who kicked 4 final quarter goals to steer the Bulldogs to victory. It was another torrid game that was injury-plague with Ryan Hargrave suffering a neck injury, Josh Gibson a hamstring injury but the most sickening of all was, the clash between Jordan Lewis and Jarrod Harbrow. Both players were going for the ball but Lewis was knocked unconscience by Harbrow and at the time, looked really serious, but to the surprise of all the supporters at the game, Lewis came back on and proved how tough the former Warrnambool player really is. The Bulldogs were well led in the Midfield by Matthew Boyd with 35 disposals, 7 marks and Ryan Griffen with 34 disposals, 6 goals and 1.0. Cyril Rioli returned to form for the Hawks chasing the Bulldogs players down, particularly Ryan Griffen a couple of times and had a stellar game up forward kicking 4.1 from 24 disposals and 6 marks. However, Hawthorn face a tough challenge despite being in good form but not winning, when they face a determined Collingwood next week, in a game that could make or break their season, while the Bulldogs also face a tough challenge, as they travel to Brisbane to take on the Lions.

Western Bulldogs: 14.16.100
Hawthorn: 12.12.84

GOALS
Western Bulldogs:
Hall 6, Murphy 2, Harbrow, Giansiracusa, Higgins, Griffen, Hahn, Hill
Hawthorn: Rioli 4, Roughead 4, Ellis, Renouf, Morton, Hodge

Fremantle Dockers def Geelong @ Subiaco Oval, Perth.
It was billed as the Match of the Round and had huge hype before the game and the game lived up to the hype from start to finish, as the rampaging Dockers team defeated Geelong in a high scoring and brilliant game of Football by 8 points @ Subiaco Oval, Perth. Even though Geelong were without few of their star players including, Matthew Scarlett, Cameron Mooney and Brad Ottens, the win was a win for the ages for the Dockers, as they became the 1st Dockers side to remain undefeated after Round 3 in their history in the AFL. The game itself saw 14 lead changes and no team particularly dominated the game. However, the Dockers did have to come from behind to win, as the Cats were up by 14 points and were themselves set for a famous victory, after a 6.4 to 3.4 3rd quarter but, the Dockers kicked 6.5 to 3.2 in the final quarter. Anthony Morabito proved that he belongs with the big boys after being a top 5 draft pick last year, kicking 2 final quarter goals, but the Dockers were well lead by their captain Matthew Pavlich who kicked 5.4 from 26 disposals and 6 marks, while the Cats were well lead by Gary Ablett who kicked 4.2 from 33 disposals and 2 marks and Paul Chapman who kicked 3.1 from 28 disposals and 5 marks. The Dockers could continue their historic streak with a win over a depleted St.Kilda team who will be without their leader Nick Riewoldt while the Cats should bounce back at home with a win over Port Adelaide.

Heroics of the Week:
Sam Fisher (St.Kilda) and Jordan Lewis (Hawthorn)

Normally, I would choose just one incident of the weekend for my Heroics of the Week, however, this week, I will be choosing two incidents. These two acts just proves how tough, this Australian game truely is and without protection from pads and helmuts like in the American game, I am surprised that more serious injuries doesn't occur. To the older people who say that the game has gone soft. Why don't you tell that to the players who play the game and see where you will get with those thoughts?
The 1st incident was when Sam Fisher was backing back into a pack of players and was knocked unconscience in the Saints game against the Magpies. At the time, it looked like the Saints defender night was over, but he came onto the ground and inspired a win for the Saints over a wayward Collingwood. The win was a couragous win for the Saints, as they were without their captain Nick Riewoldt who has done a serious hamstring injury and Lenny Hayes who injured his nose.
The 2nd incident is involving Warrnambool player Jordan Lewis who was going for the ball and not knowing who was coming, was collected by Jarrod Harbow, in a fair hip and shoulder I thought, but I woudnt be surprised if Harbrow gets investigated for the incident. Lewis came back onto the ground, just like Fisher did, but it did not inspire the win though for the Hawks. However, the Hawks should take note of the incident and use that as a blue-print, to inspire them to have a win over Collingwood in Round 4.
