Player of the Week:
Andrew Embley (West Coast Eagles) and Jude Bolton (Sydney Swans)
They say when a player hits the 30 years of age mark, it's when they should start thinking about retirement because that's when they start playing poor football. However, someone forgot to tell that to West Coast Eagles' Andrew Embley and Sydney Swans' Jude Bolton.
At 30 and 31 years of age respectively, both players has had sensational starts to the seaosn for their respective clubs when people would have started to doubt that they can bring out their best again. Andrew Embley was brilliant against Port Adelaide wounding back the clock to 2006, gathering 32 disposals, 11 marks and kicking 4.1. While Jude Bolton had 25 disposals, 3 marks and kicked 3.1 including the goal that put the Swans in front in a nail biter against Essendon.
Both players have appeared to be rejuvenated and has added strings to their bow, particularly Jude Bolton. Bolton has never been considered a goalkicking midfielder, however in the 1st 2 rounds of the season, he has kicked 6 goals, to be equal leader in the Swans goalkicking award along with Ben McGlynn. How the Swans tried to offered him up for trade bait at the end of the 2007 season, still baffles me and next week, he plays his 260th game for the Swans and will go into 3rd placing in the games most played for the Swans.
These two combatants will go face to face once again in round 3 and will hopefully continue the strong and respectful rivalry between the West Coast Eagles and the Sydney Swans in Perth. Has the new sub rule helped the older players such as Embley and Bolton? Who knows at this early stage, but the new rule has seemed to have a positive impact on the game and may extend some players careers.
