Heroics of the Week:
Lewis Jetta - (Sydney Swans)
After 19 straight behinds in 2010 which is an amazing record in itself, Sydney Swans 1st year player Lewis Jetta, broke through for his 1st AFL goal in excellent fashion against Hawthorn @ the SCG.
However, even on Saturday, he would have thought, the day would never come and that elusive goal would elude him, as on the 3 quarter time siren, he was running into an open goal after receiving a handball from Adam Goodes and just before he kicked the goal, the siren blew.
Finally relief came with 5 minutes to go, when the Swans got the ball from the half-back line, and it ended up with Martin Mattner across half-forward, instead of blazing away, Mattner saw Jetta with the corner of his eye, Jetta took the mark, played on and snapped truely, ending frustration and sleepless nights, that he would have had. When he kicked the goal, all the Swans players ran to him in celebration, similar to when Plugger Lockett kicked that famous behind in the 1996 Preliminary Final.
When we drafted Lewis Jetta in the 2009 AFL National Draft @ pick 14, I thought, we may have stolen an elite talent. From a lot of reports I have read, Jetta could have easily been taken in the top 10 and when the Eagles passed him up and went with Brad Sheppard, it was the Swans that pounced on the skinny young Western Australian.
Now that the monkey is off his back, I hope that there's more goals in store for the Swans fans and I wouldn't be surprised now, if he kicks multiple goals this week, against the Fremantle Dockers. Time will tell though, whether we did steal a talent and that Jetta can light up the SCG for years to come, with amazing runs and skillful goals.
