Heroics of the Week:
Mathew Stokes (Geelong)
After being disgraced in the 1st half of the season by being suspended by Geelong, for breaking numerous rules including drug possession and when it looked like that his career at the club looked to be in doubt, Stokes has transformed his career and has been rejuvenated since his off-field drama that had plagued him, which seemed to have made him a better player.
Since his return in Round 8 against the Brisbane Lions, Stokes has had 171 disposals, 40 marks and has kicked 13.3. On Saturday afternoon, another turnaround event in his career occured when the Cats were challenged by Hawthorn. In the 2nd half, Stokes kicked 4 goals, to help steer the Cats to a 2 point victory over arch enemies Hawthorn.
The Cats and the Hawks since the 2008 Grand Final, has had a marvellous rivalry happening. Since the Grand Final, the margin between these two teams has been no more than 8 points. Round 1, 2009, it was the Cats by 8 points, Round 17, 2009, the Cats won by 1 point after a behind from Jimmy Bartel after the siren, Round 2, 2010, it was the Cats by 9 points, after coming from behind trailing by 24 points at half-time and last Saturday it was the cats by 2 points. But can the Hawks change the tide again, in the finals series like they did in the 2008 Grand Final? Time will tell in one of the best modern day rivalries.
