Heroics of the Week:
Phil Davis (Adelaide Crows)
To bump or not to bump, that has been a hot question over the past few years, as a few players has been suspended, over controversial bumps on players. However, there is a right way to go about it and the wrong way to go about it. Last week we saw Lance Franklin from the Hawthorn Football Club, went low and got Swans player Martin Mattner high with his bump, that is the wrong way to go about bumping a player. That is a dangerous type of bump, as Mattner was over the ball and Franklin collected him high. And we don't want to see a player ever get the same treatment as Footscray's Neil Sachse copped, when he was left a quadriplegic after an on-field incident in 1975 against Fitzroy.
The right way to go about a fair bump or hip and shoulder, is the way Aaron Sandilands did it to the young defender from the Adelaide Crows Phil Davis. Davis was heavily bumped in a fair contest when both players were going for the ball. Davis had to be stretchered off the ground, as he was concussed from the hit. But having said that, Davis has won my respect, not only from that bump on the weekend, but by the way he has impressed me on the field, in his 1st season of AFL Football.
Personally, I am quite happy that Aaron Sandilands got off this charge, as it would have been a blight on the game, if he had been suspended and the bump or the hip and shoulder, as we use to call it, would have been gone from the game. I hope the art of the bump doesn't die, we need it in our game, as Australian Football is a contact sport, people are fed up with rule changes and making our game softer, to please the parents and the political correct nutcases out there.
Let's not have our game violent by all means, but, let's keep our game hard and fair. Enjoy the video that I have posted, thanks from Dave Harding, who posted a blog about the bump and I agree, let's keep the bump in our game and no more BLOODY RULE CHANGES!
