Carlton def Richmond @ the MCG, Melbourne.
Not only was the Formula 1 Grand Prix was in Melbourne, but the 2010 AFL Season also kicked off in Melbourne and on Thursday night, the young and an inexperience Richmond side took on a new look Fevolaless Carlton line up. Questions were asked about Carlton's new forward line and how they will they kicked goals in 2010. Setanta O'hAilpin, Eddie Betts, Chris Yarran got 3 each, Marc Murphy, Jarrad Waite and Bryce Gibbs got 2 each, if they keep that consistent effort each week, they'll be a competitive team throughout season 2010. Andrew Carrazzo was superb for Carlton leading the way in the midfield with 40 disposals. As for Richmond, it was the same old, same old for them and it's going to be a long year ahead for Richmond, so the Tigers fans do need a lot of patience.

Geelong def Essendon @ the MCG, Melbourne

Geelong took on Essendon, in a game I went too on Friday night and the Cats held off a spirited Essendon team winning by 31 points after a big scare. Half way through the 3rd quarter, Essendon had led by 24 points and looked too quick for Geelong and comfortable, however, Jay Neagle had the opportunity to extend their lead when he took the mark 30 metres in front, instead of going back and taking a set-shot on goal, Neagle decided to play on and was tackled and pinged for holding the ball. The cats kicked the next 9 goals from them on, to go on for a big win.

Votes:
5: Gary Ablett (Cats), 4: Jimmy Bartel (Cats), 3: Brent Stanton (Bombers), 2: Shannon Byrnes (Cats), 1: Cameron Ling (Cats)

Hawthorn def Melbourne @ the MCG, Melbourne.

Hawthorn put their injury-riddled Pre-Season behind them and scored a big win over a hapless and disappointing Melbourne line-up on Saturday afternoon. The game was effectively over, when the Hawks kicked 6 un-answered goals in the opening quarter to set up a big 56 point victory. Both teams were missing big name players, however, both teams did unearth several good youngsters, Melbourne debuted Tom Scully and Jack Trengove who both played well, while Hawthorn unearthed Carl Petersen, formally on Richmond’s rookie list. Luke Hodge returned to his best with a 34 disposal, 1 goal, 2 behind display. However, Hawthorn will have a much tougher task next week, when they take on Geelong at the MCG, in a game, I’ll be going to. This game could make or break the Hawks season, even though it’s still early. If they can cause an upset, it’ll help them go a long way in making the finals.

Votes:
5: Luke Hodge (Hawks), 4: Sam Mitchell (Hawks), 3: Jordan Lewis (Hawks), 2: Grant Birchall (Hawks), 1: Jarryd Roughead (Hawks)

St.Kilda def Sydney Swans @ ANZ Stadium, Sydney.
For the 3rd season in a row, the Saints and the Swans squared off in Round 1 and produced another controversial thriller at ANZ Stadium in Sydney. The Saints had led by 20 points at 3 quarter time, but held off a fast finishing Swans in the final term amongst controversy. The Swans debuted 6 new players for the game, 5 from other clubs. Adam Goodes was at his freakish best at times, scoring a Soccer goal and minutes later, making a Soccer-style cross which set-up Daniel Bradshaw’s 1st goal in the Red and the White. Justin Koschitzke for the Saints will spend a couple of weeks on the sidelines with a head high hit on Nick Malceski. It was a hard-earned victory for the Saints.

Votes:
5: Ryan O’Keefe (Swans), 4: Nick Riewoldt (Saints), 3: Tadhg Kennelly (Swans), 2: Jarrad McVeigh (Swans), 1: Leigh Montagna (Saints)

Brisbane Lions def West Coast Eagles @ the Gabba, Brisbane.
A new look Brisbane Lions line-up with 6 debutants in the team, took on and defeated a spirited and plucky West Coast Eagles at the Gabba on Saturday night. Brendan Fevola was solid up forward despite being wayward kicking 3 goals, 7 behinds. However, the Lions were made to work hard for their win and were trailing by 2 points at 3 quarter time before kicking 7.6 in the last quarter to set up the win. Jonathan Brown led the way for the Lions as captain, kicking 5.2. The Eagles showed a lot of spirit against the Lions and will surprise plenty of teams this year, if they can improve on their skills.

Votes:
5: Jonathan Brown (Lions), 4: Jared Brennan (Lions), 3: Adam Selwood (Eagles), 2: Luke Power (Lions), 1: Sam Butler (Eagles)

Port Adelaide def North Melbourne @ AAMI Stadium, Adelaide

On Sunday, Port Adelaide held off a fast-finishing North Melbourne team to record a 14 point win at AAMI Stadium. The Power led as much by 50 points, but a 5 goals to 2 final quarter from the Kangaroos gave the Power a scare. Kane Cornes was back to his best with 39 disposals, while Brent Harvey also was back to his best with 23 disposals and 3 goals. Cameron Hitchcock who was a revelation during the NAB Cup, continued to be a livewire for the Power up forward getting 13 disposals and kicking 2 goals.

Votes:
5: Kane Cornes (Power), 4: Brent Harvey (Kangaroos), 3: Liam Anthony (Kangaroos), 2: Travis Boak (Power), 1: Brett Ebert (Power)

Collingwood def Western Bulldogs @ Etihad Stadium, Melbourne
Two Swans squared off for the first time in Barry Hall and Darren Jolly with Jolly taking the honours and the Magpies causing the 1st upset of the season, winning by 36 points at Etihad Stadium. Collingwood flew out of the blocks in the opening term kicking 8 goals to 3 and led by 30 points at quarter time. However, the Bulldogs made a spirited comeback, but Collingwood withstood the storm and ran away with a convincing upset win. Dane Swan who won my Player of the Year Award last year, left off where he began last year and was pivotal in the Magpies victory having 31 disposals and kicking 3 goals. The game definitely lived up to the hype and expectations. The 2 Magpies recruits Jolly and Luke Ball had quiet games but proved that they will be very valuable this year for the Magpies.

Votes:
5: Dane Swan (Magpies), 4: Heath Shaw (Magpies), 3: Matthew Boyd (Bulldogs), 2: Alan Didak (Magpies), 1: Paul Medhurst (Magpies)

Fremantle Dockers def Adelaide Crows @ Subiaco Oval, Perth
The Fremantle Dockers stunned an injury-ravaged Crows line-up in the best possible way earning a 56 point win at Subiaco Oval. Michael Barlow starred and was best on ground on debut with 33 disposals and 2 goal game and was a revelation and everywhere for the Dockers. After a tight 1st quarter, the Dockers was simply too good and dominated the Adelaide Crows. Could 2010 be the year, the Dockers finally come of age and make the finals and surprise everyone? Adam McPhee returned to the Dockers after crossing over from Essendon in the Pre-Season but had a quiet game with 6 disposals. The Adelaide Crows have had a Pre-Season from hell and will lick their wounds and hopefully bounce back in round 2.

Votes:
5: Michael Barlow (Dockers), 4: Luke McPharlin (Dockers), 3: Greg Broughton (Dockers), 2: Paul Duffield (Dockers), 1: Matthew Pavlich Dockers

Heroics of the Week:
Sharrod Wellingham: (Collingwood)
When the Western Bulldogs had the momentum of the game in the 3rd quarter, the Bulldogs took the ball into their forward 50. Sharrod Wellingham from the Magpies, was running back into the pack and not knowing what was coming, took an accidental hit to the head from an elbow from Barry Hall who was leading for the mark and that knock forced Wellingham off the ground. That act however, inspired the Magpies to an upset win.
