Fence-sitting on Tasmania's AFL dream
April 21st 2008 04:44
TASMANIA'S push to get into the AFL got me thinking. Not whether the Apple Isle deserved its own team, or whether the AFL would ever take their push seriously but something more homogenous.
Would Tasmanian AFL supporters, who barrack with as much passion as anyone for their particular teams, switch allegiances if their state finally had a standalone team in the AFL?
Would die-hard Saints supporters, for example, turn their back on the boys from Morrabbin and support the Tassie Devils (surely that would be their moniker). Or would Tasweigans stick with their original sides with a soft spot for the new boys of the competition?
Quite possibly they might support both teams equally but that opens itself up to accusations of sitting on the fence.
The same question applies to those already affiliated with teams in the AFL’s expansion areas - western Sydney and the Gold Coast. Would a Gold Coaster (presumably a Brisbane supporter) ditch the Lions because a team set up an hour down the road?
But I have a feeling that Tasmanian’s would be faced with a more difficult decision due to their long-time yearning for their own identity in the ‘national’ competition.
I should know, because I am one.
I’ve always dreamed of having a Tasmanian AFL team and would support it wholeheartedly. But at the same time, I could never turn my back on the team I’ve supported for my whole life, the Melbourne Demons.
Call me a fence-sitter, but I’d support both teams equally. At least it would double the chance of being able to witness a premiership before I die.
Unfortunately, it’s probably a situation I will ever only dream about.
